COSHH is specific set of regulations in law which require employers to control all substances that are hazardous to health.
COSHH stands for the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health and it is essential that employees working with a wide range of substances are fully trained in how to meet the guidelines set out by COSHH.
They should also learn how to prevent exposure to the many potentially hazardous chemicals in the workplace.
What classes as a substance ‘hazardous to health’?
The legal definition of a substance ‘hazardous to health’ is described as “very toxic, toxic, harmful, corrosive or Irritant” under the Classification, Labeling and Packaging Regulation (CLP).
The regulation has been in force since January 2009 to combine with the already existing REACH regulations, in force across the EU since 2007. The core aim of the REACH legislation is to provide protection for human health and the environment from the use of chemicals.
Employees need to understand the importance of risk assessments on any substance and also the outcomes of a risk assessment.
